This is very close to SJO Airport. Great for before or after flights for that reason (I stayed after and before flights). Alajuela street layout is easy to navigate. Tons of restaurants and shops in the vicinity.

I think most travelers would not spend more than two nights in Alajuela- 1 inbound and 1 outbound.
I spent 5+2 nights in Alajuela while I was getting ready for my family members' visits spread over a few days.
Our "suburban" enclave was up-to-date with modern facilities, and close to Alajuela near the Freeway 1.
The location where we stayed was "authentic" with a tiny super, a cute bakery, a soda, and the most delightful neighbors.
I could almost stay to learn the language. :0

I stayed pretty close to a large shopping mall--just a few blocks away--so the restaurant options were great. I ate at "Mahalo"--great poke! The house is within a few miles of the airport, so getting there only cost 3 colones, and I took a Tuasa bus (for about two dollars) to get to Alajuela from downtown San Jose. The only "negative" is that there were traffic sounds, but they settled down when it got later. I would definitely stay in Alajuela again. I felt completely safe walking back alone at night after dinner.

The area is fun and easy to get around.
The area is fun and easy to get around. There are many small stores, but no good supermarkets. TONS of cafes and fast food places, so getting something to eat is easy. I'd go there again, but there's not a ton to do unless you enjoy sitting in parks, which I do.

It’s the best location to stay on your first night,...
It’s the best location to stay on your first night, especially if you arrive in the evening and don’t have an “all inclusive“ vacation booked; and best location for your last night in Costa Rica, due to the proximity to the airport.
Be warned, the red taxis are really expensive and Uber drivers are allowed to drop you off at the airport, but are not allowed to pick you up from the airport. Most places that offer accommodation, also offer a pickup service from the airport. Take it. The closer to the airport, the cheaper they get; prices start at $5 and could get to $35, $40 US dollars , depending on the distance to the airport.
Most rental cars offices are around the airport, so, look for a place to stay not too far away from the airport and one that offers drop off to a rental car office. If not, it’s always an Uber driver available. The closer to the airport, the better, for first and last night stay, because driving in the city could take a veeeeeery long time.
If you have time, walk the streets of Alajuela, people are very friendly and ready to help. Be very careful, the water tranches along the pedestrian walkways, are very deep, and the holes on the uneven pavement are deep as well, but definitely go to the city’s fresh market; it is a very interesting experience. Make sure you calculate well the prices, from corones into dollars, lots of vendors will try to take advantage of you, if you don’t pay attention. You can pay in US dollars everywhere, except for buses (long distance or local buses); the dollar bills must be pristine, one little tear anywhere on the bill, will be refused.
All in all is a nice city full of hustle and bustle, with lots of cars and people, with little parks with amazing trees, lots of perrots, delicious fresh fruits and gelatos
We chose a location close to the airport, good price, no luxury. We got what we paid for: in the vibrant and authentic old town of Alajuela (what is much more attractive than the huge city area of San Jose), a familiar bed and breakfast, with a nice little room for a fair price. The staff is very friendly and they serve a well organized breakfast in the pretty patio. They organized us a taxi that appeared exactly at 4 pm and the very important sense of staying there was done perfectly. Thanks for this great stay!
Very nice people who work here and it's a nice and clean hostel. We stayed here for two times, at the beginning of our holiday and at the end. I would recommend the normal 2 persons room more over the luxury one since this one is less noisy and a bit more dark but both rooms are good! You can have some nice meals here also. There is a taxi service from the hostel so you don't have to struggle with finding your way through the (illegal) taxi jungle when you arrive in Alajuela.
Most beautiful hotel I’ve stayed in, over my 18 years in CR. Got stuck unexpectedly in San José heading back to Boston from my finca. What a lucky find!
Architecturally stunning and comfortable with lovely staff. Well-appointed room w/ comfy bed. Best brekkie in a CR hotel. Indoor gardens & Nicaraguan tile work. Shared a bottle of wine with Alessandra (the owner/architect’s granddaughter) who shared the history of her family’s home with us and treated us like old friends.
The perfect place to stay in Alajuela ! This was the best hostel I made during my trip. The host is super nice and welcoming, she cooks delicious homemade breakfast, everything is super clean and confortable, and this place is in the centre of the city and 10 min away from the airport with a taxi ! I recommend this hostel to start or finish your trip in the most perfect conditions :)
We love this hotel and have been coming back for years! It’s close proximity to the airport is super convenient and it is walking distance to the town square in Alajuela with restaurants and shops which makes it a perfect location to spend some time near San Jose. The staff is so friendly. Best value in San Jose!!
This is a luxury hotel!! Everything is very upscale and classy. Love that the rooms are light, bright, airy, and minimalist. Beautiful bathrooms, beautiful lobby, AMAZING complementary breakfast (huge). Staff is sooooo nice and accommodating. I loved my stay here and wish I was staying for a few more nights.
Very cute hotel that stayed true to it's original architecture and beauty. The breakfast (additional cost) was delicious and the staff was friendly. The hotel was centrally located in the city center of Alajuela, and a short drive from the airport. Would return when I come back to Alajuela!
The hotel was not too far from the airport which was perfect as we had arrived late in San Jose. The breakfast was excellent, the best I’ve had in Costa Rica so far. The hotel has lovely gardens, well kept pool and a good pool table. A nice place to relax and take in the lush surroundings.
The host took the time to explain to us about the place. It was more of a hostel than a hotel. Very convenient as you are in Alajuela, you can walk anywhere. Full kitchen facilities and a nice small yard. Host was nice and gave me some advice on off street parking.
This boutique hotel is a quiet charming Tico house. The best part is Esteban came to get us at the airport and dropped us the next morning, told us stories about Costa Rica and explaining everything. The room is small but comfortable. Hot shower and quiet!
Very convenient for the airport and with a free airport shuttle. No need to negotiate the traffic jams in/through San Jose on the day of flights and much cheaper than the hotel-chain accommodation options on the airport campus/periphery.
Shuttleservice to the airport included. The pool was really nice and a lot of plants around, beautiful spot to relax before or after a long flight. Good restaurant not far away from the hotel (best food we had in these 3 weeks holiday)
Space is quite basic. Compared to other places in Alajuela, not too bad, the location is a plus, but just 5 minutes further you find much nicer places to stay, still close to the airport. Not the worst hotel, but also not too exciting.
Very nice hotel close to the airport. We stayed there on the first and last day of our trip. Rooms are very nice and clean, food is good, staff very helpful. Location is great, right in the middle of Alajuela.
nice clean modern hotel with great staff and shuttle service to the airport available 24/7 - the breakfast was the best Hamoton breakfast ever lol - seriously, it was good!
It’s a simple yet very nice place in Alajuela. For the budget it’s the best. Laura the owner is really nice and welcoming and included a nice breakfast. Best value in town
