The location is super central - you can walk everywhere. No need to have a car but if you do there's some parking and although my car was too large for the tiny old streets, I was able to leave it in the local piazza.

Viterbo has a very large historic area, quite a lot of which is either pedestrianised or restricted to local traffic. It has a lot of parking areas outside the historic area, and there are elevators from two of them to the edge of the centre. It is not only an interesting place to walk around, but the countryside around is well worth investigating.

We found Viterbo to be an underrated gem of a town. It was a university town which meant it provided a youthful population, with lots of eating options and price points. The medieval center of town was amazingly beautiful, and the locals were very friendly. It is easy to access nearby sites from this city, while still being close to Rome. The hosts were yhe best, kind and helpful. When my husband went down to see if he could bring me a cup of tea for breakfast, our host insisted on bringing a wonderful breakfast tray to our room! And as a great reminder of our stay, we were able to purchase new oil and preserves from their own orchards. Fabulous find!
