Location is exceptional (especially as a "base" for touring Tuscany), breakfast was ok, the hotel and the rooms were very clean. Staff was nice and very helpful, although we had a hard time communicating in English (at the hotel restaurant mostly). Restaurant food was great as well as their local wine. Garden and hotel grounds are well maintained and beautiful but the proximity to a busy road takes away the feeling of being in nature.

San Gimignano is a place to see after the tour parties have departed and before they arrive next morning. La Cisterna is a beautifully located hotel in which to base yourself. Great restaurant with fine views, likewise excellent breakfast in a dining room with a view.

A Tempting Tuscan Sun
San Gimignano, with the Italian sun glistening intently on its 14 remaining towers, cuts a dramatic figure from its position high on a Tuscan hill overlooking vineyards. However, it is when you get up-close-and-personal with this medieval-walled city and crane your neck to the blue sky that you truly appreciate its mesmerising beauty.

A trip to Tuscany must include San Gimignano! Highly recommend for its medieval charm, spectacular views and delicious food. It really feels like stepping back in time. It’s not public transport accessible and if you have limited time, hiring a car is the best way to go. Ample public parking is available as well.
We visited around late October so it wasn’t too busy compared to summer time and the weather was perfectly warm during the day and mild around dinner time. Light jacket only. It’s a photographer’s delight as there’s always a scenic opportunity as we turn a corner.
From SG we drove to Siena, another stunning city close by and not to miss! For lunch we were lucky enough to stumble upon a small multi-Routard recommended resto and it seriously did not disappoint. It’s called Osteria Nonna Gina di Lella e Dado. Some of the best pasta we’ve had in Emilia Romagna is here.
Also don’t miss the gelato at Gelateria Dondoli, they’ve won multiple awards and offer unique gelato flavours you really have to try.

If you’re in Tuscany, you have to visit San Giminiano.
If you’re in Tuscany, you have to visit San Giminiano. The city centre has a very special architecture and a lot of small shops and wineries. It’s the perfect place to spend a few days with your spouse. We had a wine tasting at Marronaia Winery, close to the city and we enjoyed it, but next time I would also try another winery, like Tenuta Torciano, which we tried a few months earlier. We ate a fantastic meal at ristorante Fuoriluogo, which I recommend strongly. I recommend staying as close as possible to the city, it’s a nice feeling that you can walk while admiring the sights.

I can't describe it, you have to be there, you have to see this miracle.
I recommend parking lots number 3 and 4, there is always space, the price is reasonable and you only have to walk for a few minutes, and there is also an elevator.

It is one of the most unique destinations in all of Europe. San Gimignano is a must-visit when in Tuscany. Its medieval appearance whisks you back in time and one can easily transform the tourists to locals bringing their food to market. High-quality restaurants and a world-champion gelateria, what is not to fall in love with. Leave your healed shoes at home and wear comfortable footwear as the streets, side streets and shops are far from smooth, but this is just part of the experience

You can explore the Torre Grossa and a couple of other sites with one pass, there's excellent pasta (you will smell the ragù while you explore in the afternoon!) and aperitivi for just a few euros, plenty of places to cool off with gelato, and the view over Tuscany from the Torre and the Rocca are spectacular.
The town in miniature is also worth your time. And be sure to have a glass of Vernaccia, the local white wine!
Anitca Dimora offers a perfect retreat near San Gimignano, boasting stunning views and proximity to the town. Our stay in the Corte - full suite was delightful; the rooms were spacious, impeccably clean. Despite our late arrival, the staff were responsive and welcoming. A complimentary breakfast basket (usually not included) on check-out day was a lovely touch. If you're exploring Tuscany, Antica Dimora is the ultimate choice. Very close to most of historic towns and wineries. Highly recommended without a doubt.
- Very friendly, helpful and uncomplicated staff!
- The location is FANTASTIC! 2 mins from the center of San Gimignano and all restaurants and an amazing bakery is "right next door".
- Very clean bed sheets and towels. Better than many hotels.
- The windows had mosquito nets installed. (Very needed, bc there are nasty mosquitoes in the summer)
- Parking right infront of the house.
- We were allowed to use the pool at the main office building (3min drive by car).
We loved our stay in Borgo Montauto! Thank you very much for having us.
The room was perfect for us, the house is lovely, breakfast really good!! The location was perfect to visit Tuscany whilst enjoying the calm and the views of the countryside. Special mention for the swimming pool, which is really enjoyable given the warmth of Italy.
There even is a covered area to park the car in the shade!
Exceptional stay, recommend 100%.
Excellent location off the Main Street and piazza to provide a some quiet.
Breakfast included was the best I've had while in Spain and Italy.
B&B is located above the restaurant. The restaurant on the main floor and terrace is extremely nice. Guest of the B&B can choose from a prix fixe menu which seemed like a good deal. But ensure to make a reservation as the restaurant is very popular and well-rated.
Our favorite stay in Italy of the 5 places we stayed. This B&B is gorgeous. The outside is so beautiful with gardens, manicured bushes and trees, amazing view, nice seating. The view is perfection. The walking distance is easy. It’s a great value for a lovely place. The hostess Benedetta , co owner, has a lovely demeanor, great attention to detail, open to share any helpful tips. Great communication.
Absolutely gorgeous choice for Tuscany and nearby San Gimignano. The family and their puppy were lovely to us and we enjoyed the winery tour and tasting. Breakfast each morning was quaint with stunning views. The apartment was gorgeous with roses leading up to the door, and the master bedroom had incredible views. Better if you have a rental car here to explore nearby towns-which luckily we did.
If you have the time I absolutely recommend staying overnight in San Gimignano, rather than just doing a day trip. The location of the hotel was perfect, especially for arrival by car as easy walk from parking. The history of the hotel building was a bonus. It's proximity to the heart of the town was great.
The property is stunning. Such a wonderful location for exploring nearby Tuscany, but still having a tranquil base to return to relax to. Alessandro was amazing- his dinner was incredible (some of the best food we had in Italy) and he did everything he could to make us feel welcome. A Truly magical stay!
The location is incredible, in a small, beautiful Tuscan village: exactly what you would hope for when travelling to Italy. The rooms are rustic, beautifully renovated and comfortable. Beyond that, the staff goes above and beyond to meet your every need and genuinely cares about all guests.
exquisite design detail; luxury at every turn; wonderful attentive yet discreet service; food was some of the best I've eaten in Italy and the presentation was Michelin started.
overall it is peaceful, understated, romantic and personifies what a luxury boutique hotel should be
This was the best place we stayed during our 2 week Italy trip! The rooms are super cosy and clean. The location is perfect, right in the middle of the old time. What really made us love this place was the kindnesses and friendly demeanor of the owner.
What a fantastic place! We were a party of 4 with 2 dogs and loved every minute of our short stay here. An excellent stop amongst the olive groves on our way down to southern Italy. Will definitely be visiting again.
The view was extraordinary overlooking the countryside of San Gimignano. The hotel is close to a parking facility and several restaurants and shops. We were so taken with it that we decided to stay an extra night.
Great location (beautiful walk into San Gimignano), beautiful pool, decent workout room, and exceptional staff. A nice surprise was the restaurant, where we had the best meal of our entire trip to Italy!
All the hotel was very pleasant; convenient localization near San Gimignano, the restaurant next to the hotel (they prepared a dinner for us even they are closing); free parking
Primetta and Mauro are two wonderful people that will brighten up your day. The location is perfect, only 3 minutes walking to San Gimignano historic center.
